DHL will use drones to deliver medication to North Sea island
DHL has obtained permission to use a drone to deliver packages on the German island of Juist. This is the first time that this type of aircraft can fly in Europe.
Called Parcelcopter, this drone will be used primarily for the delivery of medical supplies for a pharmacy located on the island of Juist, northern Germany. The unit has received approval to fly in a limited area, the German Minister of Transport. Drones can browse the 12 km separating the mainland from the island of Juist and carry parcels weighing up to 1.2 kg, flying mainly over the sea.
According to DHL, the service is expected to begin as early as Friday to extend until the end of October, weather permitting. The 1,700 residents of the island will improve the timeliness of drugs in emergencies. With 5 kg and a top speed of 60 km / h, the Parcelcopter can reach the island in 15-30 minutes.
If the proposed DHL is successful, it is possible that the service grows and competition Amazon Prime Air. However, in Germany as elsewhere, the drones are subject to limiting regulations. These devices can not take off or land in populated areas, they must be controlled by remote control and therefore do not behave as autonomous drones. Their altitude may yet exceed 20 meters.
